Mr. Younger

The information is as follows:

masters, other fire service organisations, the Institution of Fire Engineers and my Department. It has no funds and members are unpaid; expenses incurred by members in attending meetings are reimbursed, and in 1979 the total of these expenses was £450.

Corresponding figures for earlier years are not available, but would be broadly comparable to that for 1979.

Servicing of the council is undertaken by officers of my Department as part of their normal duties.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give, for the latest available 12-month period, the total financial costs, including administration, of the Scottish Economic Council, the amount disbursed by that body, the number of persons, including secretaries, involved with the body, the amount of payment for respectively, members of the body by way of salary or equivalent, expenses of members, and secretarial salaries and expenses; and what were the figures in all the above categories in each of the past five years, respectively.

Mr. Younger

The Scottish Economic Council, of which I am chairman, is an advisory body concerned with the economic development of Scotland. The council does not disburse any funds. It has at present 28 members all of whom are appointed on a personal basis; membership has varied between this figure and 16 in the past six years. Appointments to the council are unpaid; members may claim travelling expenses. Costs in the last financial year and in the previous five financial years were as follows:

1979–80 £370
1978–79 £860
1977–78 £480
1976–77 £540

Mr. Younger

The Scottish Records Advisory Council, appointed by the Secretary of State under the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937, comprises 12 members,

A number of the staff of my Department are concerned in one way or another with servicing the council as part of wider duties. It is not possible precisely to quantify the staff time or costs involved.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give, for the latest available 12-month period, the total financial costs, including administration, of the Scottish Food Hygiene Council, the amount disbursed by that body, the number of persons, including secretaries, involved with the body, the amount of payment for, respectively, members of the body by way of salary or equivalent, expenses of members, and secretarial salaries and expenses; and what were the figures in all the above categories in each of the past five years, respectively.

Mr. Younger

The information is as follows:

including the Keeper of the Records who is chairman ex officio. Members are unpaid and travelling expenses, where claimed, have averaged in total £15 annually in recent years. Mr. Younger

The Scottish Industrial Development Advisory Board advises the Secretary of State for Scotland on applications for selective financial assistance under section 7 of the Industry Act 1972; it does not itself disburse moneys.

The board consists of a chairman and 11–10 prior to 1977—members. All are unpaid and receive expenses only for attendance at meetings. During the past five years such expenses totalled:

1976–77 1,740
1977–78 1,346
1978–79 1,416
1979–80 1,496

The board does not employ directly any staff, but is serviced by officials of the Scottish Economic Planning Department as part of their duties in administering selective financial assistance. The amount of their time devoted to meetings of the board cannot be precisely apportioned or costed.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give, for the latest available 12-month period, the total financial costs, including administration,, of the Scottish Advisory Committee on Top Grade Scientific Posts, the amount disbursed by that body, the number of persons, including secretaries, involved with the body, the amount of payment for, respectively, members of the body by way of salary or equivalent, expenses of members, and secretarial salaries and expenses; and what were the figures in all the above categories in each of the past five years, respectively.

Mr. Younger

There are seven members of the Scottish Agricultural Statistics Consultative Committee. They receive no payment for their services, and have not been paid for any expenses incurred in this period. Secretarial services are provided by departmental officers in the course of their normal duties. The committee does not disburse any funds.

Mr. Sproat

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give, for the latest available 12-month period, the total financial costs, including administration, of the working party to review legal aid legislation, the amount disbursed by that body, the number of persons, including secretaries, involved with the body, the amount of payment for, respectively members of the body by way of salary or equivalent, expenses of members, and secretarial salaries and expenses; and what were the figures in all the above categories, in each of the past five years respectively.

Mr. Younger

The working party is a forum, involving three officers of the Scottish Home and Health Department and 11 representatives nominated by the Central Legal Aid Committee, for review of existing legal aid legislation and regulations in the light of practical experience of working practitioners in the legal profession. The legal members are not remunerated nor do they receive separate travelling expenses for this purpose. Secretarial support is provided by departmental and Law Society staff as an integral part of their normal duties and is not separately costed.
