§ Sir George YoungThe latest date for which information is available is December 1978, when the number of mental illness and mental handicap hospitals and units in England and Wales containing one or more units or wards used as secure accommodation was 64, and the number in Greater London was 7. These figures include interim regional secure units, units or wards which are permanently locked, and units or wards which are sometimes locked or which maintains security wholly through high staffing ratios.
