HC Deb 17 March 1980 vol 981 c1W
29. Mr. Jessel

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what is his policy concerning the retention of objects by museums which have not sufficient space to show them.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

I am satisfied that the present practice of the museums for which I am responsible, which is governed largely by statutory and other legal restrictions, is correct. Disposal powers must be exercised with great care, bearing in mind the heavy responsibilities we bear towards future generations and the importance of maintaining confidence among benefactors that donations will be properly retained. Lack of display space is not in itself a good reason for disposal.
