HC Deb 13 March 1980 vol 980 c673W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the annual revenue from income tax; and what is his estimate of the total tax which is evaded each year.

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 12 March 1980]: The amount of income tax collected in the year ended 31 March 1979 was £18,748.5 million (compared with £17,419.7 million the previous year). These figures and those for earlier years are to be found in the 122nd annual report of the Board of Inland Revenue (Cmnd 7822). It is not possible to place any reliable estimate on the amount of tax evaded.
