HC Deb 12 March 1980 vol 980 cc604-5W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied that there are sufficient opportunities for women teachers to return to work on a part-time basis after maternity leave; and if he will encourage local authorities to increase the number of part-time jobs for women teachers returning after maternity leave.

Dr. Boyson

A teacher on maternity leave would normally be expected to return to a post broadly similar in all respects to the one she left; although a change may be negotiated if it is in the mutual interests of the teacher and the employing authority. The most satisfactory blend of full and part-time teaching staff is a matter for each authority to decide in the light of local circumstances.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many female teachers in part-time work indicate that they will be returning to work after maternity leave; and how many do so;

(2) how many female teachers in full-time work indicate that they will be returning to work after maternity leave and how many do so on (a) a full-time basis and (b) a part-time basis.
