HC Deb 12 March 1980 vol 980 cc620-4W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing for each quarter since 1 January 1967 a moving average over the four preceding quarters of earnings and output per man-hour based on 1970=100 for manufacturing and for the whole economy.

Mr. Jim Lester

As comprehensive quarterly figures on man-hours are not available, the table below relates to earnings and output per head. However, estimates of hours worked are available for successive Aprils and these are incorporated in the table to enable a broad assessment to be made annually of the differences between earnings and output per head and per man-hour.

* Based on older series index of average earnings.
† Based on older series index of average earnings (covering production industries and some services) up to the first quarter of 1976; new series index (covering the whole economy) since the first quarter of 1976.
‡ Indices compiled by the Central Statistical Office (see Employment Gazette, February 1980, table 134).
§ Based on average hours worked by all adults whose earnings were not affected by absence in new earnings survey for 1970–1979, and on average hours worked by adult manual workers covered in Department of Employment surveys for earlier years. The figures entered against the quarter relate to the preceding April. This is not strictly comparable to the periodicity of the earnings and output information as the position in April may not correspond to the average for the calendar year (the mid-point of which would be June).
