Mr. Marlow

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will make a statement concerning the rates of pay of civil servants of the rank of assistant secretary and above.

Mr. Channon

The national rates of pay of the main Civil Service grades at or above assistant secretary are as follows:

Salary at 1 March 1980
Permanent Secretary £25,886 (£28,500) *
Deputy Secretary £20,314 (£22,500) *
Under Secretary £16,714 (£18,000) *
Assistant Secretary £17,000
* The full rates recommended by the Top Salaries Review Body in its eleventh report,

tem for supporting producers' incomes through premiums, provided that any arrangements are not too costly and offer the United Kingdom a fair share of the benefits in accordance with her position as the major sheep producer in the Community. Cost increases would be among the factors the Council of Ministers would take into account in deciding future levels of support for sheepmeat.
