asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) which polytechnics have existing general studies departments offering courses dealing to degree or other qualifications; how many full-time, part-time and research lecturers these departments employ; and what is the cost of the existence of these departments, of employing these lecturers and offering these courses, for the latest year for which figures are available;

(2) how many students are in (a) their first, (b) their second and (c) their third years studying general studies at each polytechnic that is operating a general studies course;

(3) which polytechnics have existing sociology departments offering courses leading to degree or other qualifications; how many full-time, part-time and research lecturers these departments employ; and what is the cost of the existence of these departments, of employing these lecturers and offering these courses, for the latest year for which figures are available;

(4) how many students are in (a) their first, (b) their second and (c) their third years studying sociology at each polytechnic that is operating a sociology course;

(5) which polytechnics have existing psychology departments offering courses leading to degree or other qualifications; how many full-time, part-time and research lecturers these departments employ; and what is the cost of the existence of these departments, of employing these lecturers and offering these courses, for the latest year for which figures are available;

(6) how many students are in (a) their first, (b) their second and (c) their third years studying psychology at each polytechnic that is operating a psychology course;

(7) which polytechnics have existing social studies departments offering courses leading to degree or other qualifications; how many full-time, part-time and research lecturers these departments employ; and what is the cost of the existence of these departments, of employing these lecturers and offering these courses, for the latest year for which figures are available;

(8) how many students are in (a) their first, (b) their second and (c) their third years studying social studies at each polytechnic that is operating a social studies course;
