HC Deb 11 March 1980 vol 980 c525W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why he has stopped sending monthly statistics on refugees from Latin America to the joint working group for refugees from Latin America and other agencies since December 1979.

Mr. Raison

Following the closure of the Latin American refugee programme, the need for monthly statistics ceased. Home Office officials are in regular contact with the joint working group and are able to give up to date information on the clearance of outstanding cases.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, of the 125 cases of Latin American refugees who were applying for letters of consent to come to the United Kingdom as refugees when the announcement was made on 29 October 1979, how many have been granted letters of consent, how many have been refused and how many are currently pending decision.

Mr. Raison

As at 10 March the figures were as follows:

Applications granted, 29 cases (66 persons); refused 40 cases (109 persons); known to have gone elsewhere before decision reached, 3 cases (13 persons); pending, 53 cases (91 persons).
