HC Deb 11 March 1980 vol 980 cc520-1W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many defendants were remanded in custody for medical reports in England and Wales in 1978 and 1979; and, of these, how many were remanded in custody under the provisions of the Bail Act which allows remand in custody if it appears to the court that it would be impracticable to make the report unless the defendant is remanded in custody.

Mr. Brittan

Information on the number of persons remanded in custody for medical reports is published annually in "Prison Statistics, England and Wales" (table 10.7 of the issue for 1978, Cmnd. 7626). Figures for 1979 are not yet available. Information is not available on the number of persons remanded in custody as a result of the provisions of paragraph 7 of schedule 1 (Part I) to the Bail Act 1976.
