HC Deb 11 March 1980 vol 980 cc491-2W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on his recent visit to Berlin.

Mr. Pym

I visited Berlin to underline the total commitment of the Government to the freedom and security of the city. When I was there I reaffirmed Allied rights and responsibilities relating to Berlin, and our intention to insist on the strict observance and full implementation of the quadripartite agreement of 3 September 1971.

This was also the first opportunity I have had to visit British soldiers and airmen who are stationed in the city and whose presence symbolises our continuing commitment there. I was much impressed by the professionalism and fighting efficiency of our forces, and by their evident enthusiasm for their different tasks.
