Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish a list of the local authorities in Wales which have contracted out to private enterprise the collection of (a) domestic refuse and (b) industrial refuse; and what steps he is taking to encourage more local authorities to adopt this course of action.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

Local authorities have no responsibility for collecting industrial refuse and none in Wales has contracted out to private enterprise the regular house-to-house collection of domestic refuse. Some employ private contractors to remove civic amenity waste.

My right hon. Friend and my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment are considering the scope for encouraging a greater measure of contracting out of refuse collection by local authorities.
