HC Deb 07 March 1980 vol 980 c345W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence, if he is satisfied with the present security arrangements at defence establishments in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Mr. Pattie

Yes, but the measures to meet the threat to the security of defence establishments are kept under constant review.

1964 1980
Non-industrial 109,800 119,000
including—
Administrative grades 500 900
Executive grades 7,600 10,300
Industrial 176,100 122,700
Locally engaged staff overseas 114,300 37,000
Total 400,200 278,700

The figures are not directly comparable because changes in departmental functions have affected Ministry of Defence responsibilities. As one example, the inception of the procurement executive and its incorporation in the MOD in May 1971 added some 17,000 non-industrials and some 11,000 industrials to the numbers recorded for the Ministry of Defence.
