HC Deb 06 March 1980 vol 980 c326W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will list those sectors of industry studied by the industrial energy thrift scheme, and make a statement on the potential for energy conservation in British industry.

Mr. David Mitchell

All industrial sectors in the standard industrial classification orders III to XIX with the exception of order IV (coal and petroleum products) are being studied in the industrial energy thrift scheme.

The potential for energy conservation in these sectors is estimated from the findings of the studies to be 20 per cent. of current energy use. This figure includes savings achievable through good housekeeping, improved thermal insulation and controls, and potential improvements in processes based on existing technology.
