HC Deb 05 March 1980 vol 980 cc222-3W
Sir Frederic Bennett

asked the Lord Privy Seal what representations Her Majesty's Government have received from Estonian diplomatic representatives in Great Britain or elsewhere about the propriety of British subjects participating in those events in the projected Moscow Olympic Games which are to take place in Estonia, which has never been recognised by Her Majesty's Government as, de jure, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. Luce

The Government have received a letter from Estonian representatives in London, as well as a number of other communications from Estonian and other Baltic organisations, querying the propriety of the participation of British subjects in Olympic events due to take place in Estonia. The Government well understand this point of view. Our advice to British athletes not to participate in Olympic events in Moscow applies with added force to Olympic events in Estonia, whose occupation by the Soviet Union was illegal.
