§ Mr. Frank Allaunasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what sums have been allocated by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for the sponsoring of research projects in higher education in Great Britain.
§ Mr. HurdI have been asked to reply.
There are three sources of NATO funds. First, under a provision for cultural relations activities, the United Kingdom has been allocated 10 Fellowships for research on aspects relevant to the North Atlantic Alliance to a total value of about £22,000 over the last three years. Secondly, the NATO committee on the challenges of modern society has awarded four fellowships to United Kingdom researchers to a total value of about £13,500 over the same period. Thirdly, the NATO science committee research grants programme totaled about £790,000 in 1979, a figure in line with previous years. Of this, 87 per cent. was devoted to paying for scientists to visit different countries of the Alliance. Information is not available on how much of this sum was granted to British researchers.
