HC Deb 03 March 1980 vol 980 c55W
Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence which countries possess nuclear weapons or devices.

Mr. Hurd

I have been asked to reply.

In terms of the treaty on the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, the following are recognised as nuclear weapon States: United States of America, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom, France, China.

India conducted a nuclear test in 1974 and stated that it was for purely peaceful purposes.
