HC Deb 24 June 1980 vol 987 cc139-40W
Mr. Wheeler

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is now in a position to give further information about the proposed crown piece to be struck to commemorate the eightieth birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elzabeth the Queen Mother.

Mr. Peter Rees

Yes. Her Majesty has today made a proclamation under the Coinage Act, 1971, giving details of this coin.

As previously announced, it is proposed to strike two versions, one in cupro-nickel and one in sterling silver. The cupro-nickel version will be of normal coinage standard, and will be available from banks at face value. The silver version will be struck to proof standard and will mainly be available by mail order from the Royal Mint, price £28.75 including VAT.

It is also intended to strike a limited issue of specially produced and packed pieces of cupro-nickel which will be available from sub-post offices, coin dealers and some banks.

The coin will generally be available from the Queen Mother's birthday 4 August 1980.
