HC Deb 19 June 1980 vol 986 c642W
Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the Official Report the details of the increase in the non-industrial staff of his Department, Navy, since April 1979, giving in each case current annual costs and the reasons for the increase.

Mr. Speed

The number of Navy Department non-industrial staff increased by 44 between 1 April 1979 and 1 June 1980 to a total of 22,935. However, this figure takes account of interdepartmental transfers of task (for which financial and numbers adjustments have been made) resulting in a net gain to the Navy Department of 181 staff. The numbers actually in post at 1 April 1979 have therefore been reduced by 137.
