asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish the current average weekly cost of a place in (a) a prison, (b) a detention centre, (c) borstal and (d) community service.

During the financial year 1978–79, the average weekly costs of keeping a male in (a) prison, (b) detention centre and (c) borstal and young prisoner centre were £111, £108 and £119 respectively. Comparable information about community service orders is not available, but I will send my hon. Friend such information as I have.
