HC Deb 22 July 1980 vol 989 c164W
50. Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest available figures for unemployed young people, including school leavers, in the Pendle travel-to-work area, compared with notified job vacancies.

Mr. Jim Lester

At 10 July, the provisional number of young people including school leavers, under 20 years of age registered as unemployed in the Nelson and Colne travel-to-work area, which includes the Pendle and Colne careers offices, was 674. At 4 July there were 12 notified vacancies remaining unfilled at these careers offices. In addition, there were 51 vacancies at the employment offices, some of which may have been suitable for people in this age group. Vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.
