HC Deb 07 July 1980 vol 988 c4W
Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is satisfied that the levels of wages paid to seamen aboard the sewage sludge vessel operated out of Newport docks by a Greek company under contract to the Welsh water authority are in accordance with agreed international levels, and that the seamen have proper work permits.

Mr. Tebbit

There are no internationally agreed rates of wages for merchant seamen, and foreign nationals employed on foreign registered ships operating from United Kingdom ports do not require work permits.
