Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs have been lost in manufacturing industry since the beginning of 1980; and how the current total of jobs in manufacturing industry compares with the monthly totals over the last 12 months.

[pursuant to his reply, 1 July 1980, c. 468]: Precise information about job gains and losses is not available, but an indication of the net change can be seen by comparing the levels of the estimates of employees in employment at different dates.

Between December 1979 and April 1980, the numbers of employees in employment (seasonally adjusted) in manufacturing industries in Great Britain fell by 143,000. The provisional estimates for each month from April 1979 to April 1980, the latest available, are as follows:
