538Whealth authorities decided, in two cases after reference to my right hon. Friend, on the permanent closure of 32 whole hospitals or units in England involving 2,271 beds. Not all of these closures will yet have taken place.
Of these 32, 27 were already being considered for closure when this Government took office.
§ Mr. Whiteheadasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how long a hospital will be allowed to remain closed, following temporary closure proceedings, before statutory closure proceedings are initiated.
§ Dr. VaughanNo time limit is specified for temporary closures; each case must be judged on its merits. But we have recently reminded health authorities that we expect there to be full consultation on all proposals for permanent closure; and that where a substantial temporary closure has to be made without prior consultation the authority is still expected to consult afterwards if there is any danger of the closure becoming lasting.
