HC Deb 22 February 1980 vol 979 c359W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the estimated cost in grants to industry per new job created for Wales and for each region of England, respectively, between 1974–75 and 1978–79 inclusive.

Mr. David Mitchell

I regret that the information is not available. Most of the assistance given to industry in those periods by the Department of Industry or by the Welsh Office was not directly related to employment. While estimates can be made of the employment associated with projects which received assistance under section 7 of the Industry Act 1972, these are based on estimates by the companies concerned of the effect of their projects on the numbers they employ. They do not take account of those projects which might have gone ahead in the absence of assistance nor of the effects of the projects on other companies in the assisted areas or elsewhere.
