asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many employees are engaged in agriculture in Wales at the last date for which information is available; and how this compares with the corresponding numbers 10 and 20 years previously.

The information is given in the table set out below. The figures which do not include the self-employed are not strictly comparable owing to changes in the definition of an agricultural holding in 1968, 1970 and 1973; the extension in 1970 of the concept of farm work to include managerial and secretarial employees; and alterations in the definitions of whole-time and part-time working.
