asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is his estimate of the number of people currently employed in research and development projects in space matters.

The figures of the Society of British Aerospace for the calendar year 1978 show that 1,440 people were engaged on space matters in the aerospace industry, of whom 482 were employed in research and development.

In addition the research and development establishments of the Ministry of Defence and the Science Research Council have approximately 350 staff engaged on space research and development work.
