HC Deb 07 February 1980 vol 978 cc329-30W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will explain the reason for the substantial differences in the figures for expenditure on research and development into alternative energy sources given to the hon. Member for Bodmin (Mr. Hicks) and the hon. Member for Sheffield, Heeley (Mr. Hooley), Official Report, 15 June 1979, column 359, and Official Report, 23 October 1979, column 146, respectively.

Mr. John Moore

The answers given on 15 June 1979 concerning the alternative sources refer to the amounts allocated by my Department to specific programmes of research and development into the alternative sources of energy listed. These allocations were made for programmes each lasting several years. The answer given on 23 October 1979 refers to my Department's expected expenditure in 1979–80 on research and development programmes on the energy sources for which such information was requested.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will now give the projected figures for expenditure on research and development into nuclear energy and alternative energy generation for 1980–81.

Mr. John Moore

The Department's estimates for expenditure in 1980–81, including provision for research and development in support of the nuclear power programme and for non-nuclear research and development, which includes alternative energy generation, will be laid before the House of Commons next month.
