Mr. Deakins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much tax relief was granted in the last financial year in respect of contributions to charitable institutions; and what proportion of this amount was in respect of educational institutions.

Mr. Peter Rees

In the financial year 1978–79 £45 million income tax was repaid to charitable institutions in respect of deeds under covenant.

I regret that information on the proportion in respect of educational institutions is not available.
