Mr. Kenneth Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what instructions he has given his Department on the numbers permitted to attend public visits or other functions paid for by his Department; and whether he has sought reduction in the cost of such official visits.

Visits are made and functions attended only where this is essential; numbers are kept to a minimum and journeys must be planned as economically as possible. Department instructions have been issued to this effect.
