HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c368W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a table indicating for each local education authority in England the ratio of pupils to teachers in primary schools and secondary schools, respectively, for the latest period for which figures are available.

Dr. Boyson

I am writing to the hon. Member.

Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the level of reduction in the pupil to teacher ratio since 1970; and whether he is seeking to reduce it further.

Dr. Boyson

The overall pupil-teacher ratio in January 1980 was 18.7 compared with 22.7 for January 1970. As to future provision, the Government will be publishing their expenditure plans in due course.
