HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c360W
Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the average percentage increase of inspectors of taxes' salaries for the years 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Mr. Peter Rees

For inspectors of taxes (the basic grade of the inspectorate) the percentage increases, at the maximum of the scale, arising from the pay settlements for 1977–78, 1978–79, 1979–80 and 1980–81 were 3.8 per cent., 9.5 per cent., 24.2 per cent., and 17.1 per cent. respectively.

Pay settlements run from 1 April in each year, but because of the staging provisions included in the settlements for 1979–80 and 1980–81 these increases were not paid in full from that date in those years. For 1979–80, 9 per cent. was paid from 1 April 1979, 14 per cent. from 1 August 1979, and the full 24.2 per cent. from 1 January 1980. For 1980–81, the increase of 17.1 per cent. was postponed to 7 May 1980.
