HC Deb 18 December 1980 vol 996 cc304-5W
Mr. Nicholas Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what effect the accession of Greece to the European Community on 1 January 1981 will have on social security and medical care benefits for United Kingdom nationals in Greece.

Mrs. Chalker

The European Community regulations on social security will apply to Greece as from 1 January 1981. As a result, United Kingdom workers and their families moving to Greece will take with them acquired rights to benefits. Among other things our pensioners living in Greece who are covered by the regulations will receive the same rate of pension as is payable in the United Kingdom, and United Kingdom visitors to Greece covered by the regulations who receive urgent necessary medical treatment under the Greek social insurance scheme will be able to do so on the same terms as Greek nationals.

Further details of the provisions of the regulations as they apply to Greece will be incorporated in the Department's leaflets SA29 (social security) and SA30 (medical care).
