asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many local authority residential centres for the care of children have been closed since May 1979.

The revision of children's regional plans, which was mostly completed, by 1 April 1979, revealed more community home places than were needed in most areas as the trend towards non-residential care increased. As a result, since May 1979 local authorities in England have requested the deletion of 94 community homes from regional plans to allow for closure.
