asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers currently teaching religious education (a) have trained with religious education as their main subject or (b) possess a religious education qualification of any type.

Information is not available for all schools. For maintained secondary schools in England and Wales it is estimated that in 1977 there were about 22,000 teachers who taught religious education. The following table gives fuller details:

will pay very close attention to the number of entries for public examinations in 1981, and if they give grounds for concern we shall give further consideration to this issue.
