HC Deb 04 December 1980 vol 995 c174W
14. Mr. Moate

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the total number of milk cows in the United Kingdom that will have been slaughtered as part of the European Economic Community compensation schemes for reducing the milk surplus in the Community by the time these schemes are concluded.

Mr. Peter Walker

By the end of October 1980 about 136,000 dairy animals had been slaughtered or exported outside the European Community under the non-marketing of milk and conversion premium scheme. It is impossible to estimate the effect of the scheme on United Kingdom milk production, but out of the total dairy herd of nearly 4 million when the scheme started in 1977, premiums have so far been approved for about 269,000 animals.
