§ 25. Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Defence whether it is the intention that the British long range defence capability should make use of United States bases on the eastern coastline of Africa or on the Arabian Peninsula.
§ Mr. PymThe United States has no bases in the areas mentioned. It has recently negotiated access to facilities owned by various Governments in the region, and in some cases these facilities are to be up-graded as part of the agreement. We have not, however, so far identified any requirement for our own forces to seek use of whatever extra facilities may be created.
