HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc505-6W
Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what proposals he has for contracting out work at present carried out by his Department to private firms; what savings he expects this to make; how many staff will be involved; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

It is proposed to employ PSA work services direct labour only on those tasks which, because of security or other special client re-requirements, location or lack of contractors, cannot be undertaken by any other means. These measures will have no significant effect on costs, but eventually will save about 6,500 staff from current levels largely by natural wastage.

Proposals for other establishments in my Department are still under consideration.
