HC Deb 06 August 1980 vol 990 cc119-20W
Mr. Park

asked the Secretary of State for Empolyment how many applications have been made, and what are the numbers covered, regionally and nationally, under the special temporary employment programme since May 1979.

Mr. Jim Lester

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that in the period 1 May 1979 to 25 July 1980 a total of 2,750 applications to sponsor special temporary employment programme schemes have been made. Information about the number of temporary jobs these proposals would have created if all of them were approved as submitted is not available. However, in the same period, 23,500 people who otherwise would have been unempolyed entered into the programme. The regional breakdown of these figures is as follows:

Regions Applications received Entrants
Scotland 734 4,700
Northern 447 3,995
Yorkshire and Humberside 377 1,880
North-West 350 4,700
Midlands 237 3,290
Wales 322 1,880
South-West 122 940
London 107 1,410
