HL Deb 04 August 1980 vol 412 cc1318-9WA
Lord HOUGHTON of SOWERBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware of any exports of carcase meat to the Middle East of animals slaughtered in this country by Moslem slaughtermen by methods which are protected from prosecution only by reason of the exceptions made in the Slaughterhouses Acts for the benefit of the resident Moslem community.

Lord SANDYS

We are aware that ritual slaughter methods are used at a number of slaughterhouses in this country. The relevant legislation is enforced by local authorities. No central records are kept of the destination of meat produced by such methods.
