The 1966 and 1971 figures are based on the census of population and those for 1975 and 1977 on the biennial EC labour force survey adjusted to be comparable with census of population coverage and definitions. This survey is based on a sample of about 100,000 households throughout the United Kingdom and the results are subject to sampling errors.
