Mr. Whitelaw

I understand from the chief constable of North Yorkshire that a maximum of 259 police officers were deployed during the disturbances in Scarborough on 5, 6 and 7 April. Six officers were injured, one suffering brief concussion and bad abrasions, the others minor bruising and sprains. Nineteen police dogs were used, but no horses. No assistance was required from other forces; the cost of the police operation is not yet available.

Eleven people were arrested for theft, 12 for assault, and 22 for being drunk and disorderly; most of them have yet to appear in court.
