HC Deb 21 April 1980 vol 983 cc5-6W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether, in view of the Bristol riots and the fact that between 1976 and 1979 there have been only 118 recruits in the Metropolitan Police force from the ethnic groups, he will initiate an urgent and extensive recruitment campaign to obtain recruits from the ethnic groups into the Metropolitan Police and to the police forces where there are large ethnic groups in domicile;

(2) what action he has taken or intends to take to increase membership by ethnic minorities of the police forces covering areas of large immigration.

Mr. Whitelaw

Chief officers of police share my wish to increase the number of police officers from the ethnic minorities. The object of recruitment publicity is to attract recruits from all sections of the community, but a special advertising campaign was conducted in the ethnic minority press early in 1979 and a similar campaign is to be mounted later this year.
