HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 cc478-9W
Mr. Butcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many illegal transmissions on frequencies used by citizens band radio operators have been detected between 1 January and 31 March; how many prosecutions there were in respect of such transmissions; how many surveillance/detection units were in use; and what has been the cost of detection and prosecution in this period.

Mr. Raison

From 1 January to 31 March, some 8,800 illicit citizens band stations were heard by officials of the Post Office radio interference service in the course of their duties. It is not possible to say how many of these transmissions have led to prosecution but during the same period 71 persons were convicted of unlicensed installation or use of such transmitters. The costs of such operations are not shown separately from the overall cost of Post Office activity against all forms of illicit transmissions.
