§ Mr. Mark CarlislePupil-teacher ratios within schools currently stand at a best-ever 23.1: 1 in primary schools and 16.7: 1 in secondary schools. The Government's policy on provision for teachers in schools up to the year 1983–84 was set out in "The Government's Expenditure Plans"—Cmnd 7841—published on 26 March.
