Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what percentage of gross national product was spent on the National Health Service in the latest year for which figures are available; and what this was as a percentage of all public expenditure.

Dr. Vaughan

In 1978, the latest year for which figures are available, 5.46 per cent. of gross national product at factor cost was spent on the National Health Service.(1) This represented 12.2 per cent. of all public expenditure.(2)
