HC Deb 23 October 1979 vol 972 c130W
Q19. Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Prime Minister what is her estimate of the number of jobs lost in the North of England as a result of the Government's policies on shipbuilding, the steel industry, regional aid to industry and the cuts in local Government spending.

The Prime Minister

No such estimate can be made, but in each case the Government's policies are a realistic response to the state of the industries concerned and the needs of the country as a whole, including the need to contain the growth of public expenditure.
