§ 21. Mr. Dormandasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will now advise local education authorities to introduce a scheme of financial assistance to pupils who stay at school after the statutory school leaving age.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneAs I explained in an oral answer today to the hon. Member 125W for Stockport, North (Mr. Bennett), local education authorities are free to operate schemes of financial assistance to school pupils over statutory leaving age. We have no plans for legislation to alter that position and do not intend to issue advice to local authorities on how they should exercise their discretion in the matter.
