HC Deb 23 October 1979 vol 972 cc124-5W
21. Mr. Dormand

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will now advise local education authorities to introduce a scheme of financial assistance to pupils who stay at school after the statutory school leaving age.

Mr. Macfarlane

As I explained in an oral answer today to the hon. Member for Stockport, North (Mr. Bennett), local education authorities are free to operate schemes of financial assistance to school pupils over statutory leaving age. We have no plans for legislation to alter that position and do not intend to issue advice to local authorities on how they should exercise their discretion in the matter.
