HC Deb 29 November 1979 vol 974 cc737-8W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how much he estimates is spent per person in the United Kingdom on semi-conductors; and how this compares with the figures for France, West Germany, Japan and the United States of America.

Mr. David Mitchell

Estimates of expenditure on semi-conductors per person on a comparable basis for the various countries listed in the question are not readily available from official sources. However, an informed private estimate for 1980 was published on 19 November 1979 in theFinancial Times and gave the following information:

Estimated semi-conductor market, per head of population 1980
$
UK 11.0
France 8.70
West Germany 18.30
Japan 24.80
USA 20.30
(the above figures do not include systems)
