My right hon. and learned Friend recognises, however, the urgent need to reach a decision on the availability of central support for development work in adult basic education, including adult literacy, when the adult literacy unit's two-year term comes to an end in March 1980, and hopes to make a statement in the immediate future.

§ Dr. BoysonIn 1977–78 about 35 per cent. of full and part-time students on higher and further education courses in England and Wales were aged 25 or over. The means of encouraging even greater participation of adults on such courses is one of the matters which my right hon. and learned Friend would expect the Advisory Council for Adult and Continuing Education to include in the report on future policies and priorities for the development of continuing 447W education to be presented to him this autumn.
